Although Civex is a new organisation, the idea behind it is not. Civex's origins can be traced back to June 2018, when the idea of an initiative then known as the Political Participation and Education Program (PolPart) was put forward to the Bunbury Youth Advisory Council, a committee of the City of Bunbury. While the committee approved the idea, it never made it past development stage.

The committee member who developed the original planned program, Sean Van Der Wielen, kept privately working on the program over the course of 2019. In January 2020, he made to eventually launch the program, now known Democracy 101, through a yet to be formed new organisation seperate from the YAC. At the time, it was called Civstreet.

In November 2020, the Democracy 101 program underwent a major makeover in preparation for the launch of the new organisation, now known as Civex.

While our name might have changed three times over the space of two and a half years, the goal remains the same: to deliver a new kind of civics education experience.

Our program is made by young people, for young people.

We know that civics education is often dull and boring for many young Australians, that's why we seek to present civics in a way that is both interesting and educational.

The Democracy 101 program created by Civex is the first of what will hopefully be one of our many ways of bringing a youthful tone to Australian civics.

We understand how important it is that the general public is able to trust our work. That is why we are committed to being a nonpartisan (e.g. no favour to any political group) organisation.

We do not work with or accept assistance from any political parties, campaigns or interest groups.

Additionally, any volunteers who have politicial affiliations are required to declare them both to us and to the general public.
